We want to be honest with every patient thinking of travelling here for treatment, because the truth is more nuanced than either the glowing adverts or the scare stories suggest.

Over 200 dental clinics have opened in Antalya in the last two years, and more than a thousand new dentists have moved here for dental tourism. It’s a gold rush — and not everyone in a gold rush has your best interests at heart. Many new facilities simply don’t meet the standards you’d expect of a reputable clinic.

There’s nothing wrong with running a business, but a worrying trend is investors opening clinics and hiring inexperienced, newly qualified dentists. Investors didn’t take the Hippocratic oath — dentists did — and investor-led clinics often chase short-term profit over long-term patient care. The Turkish Dental Association and the Ministry of Health changed the law two years ago so that a non-dentist can no longer own a dental clinic, but some investors get around this by opening in the name of a junior dentist willing to accept all the legal responsibility. This is exactly the kind of clinic to avoid.

The “Turkey Teeth” Criticism — the Honest Truth

You’ve probably seen articles by British dentists claiming that Turkish dentists “file down” healthy teeth for crowns. We understand the concern, but it’s unfair as a blanket statement. We never recommend a full set of crowns when a patient could have veneers instead — but the reality is that the majority of our patients have cases that genuinely aren’t suitable for veneers: crowded teeth, gaps, bite problems, and so on, which need crowns to fix properly and safely.

It’s true that a dental crown requires more of the tooth to be prepared than a veneer, which only needs about 0.5 mm of enamel removed — so where a veneer will do the job, that’s what we recommend. The honest answer isn’t “crowns bad, veneers good”; it’s “the right treatment for your teeth.” We’d simply ask our British colleagues to share the positive stories too, not just the negative ones. How to Choose a Clinic Safely

Check the clinic’s background and history

Would you trust a clinic that opened a year ago? We founded the “Smile Dental Turkey” brand in 2019, but our clinic — Falez Diş — has been established since 2009. Ask an online coordinator about a clinic’s history and its dentists, not just prices and hotels. With hundreds of clinics opening and only a small team at the Ministry of Health to regulate them, doing your own homework matters more than ever.

Check the dentists’ credentials

In the last decade, Turkey has opened dental faculties in almost every city — there are now over 100, graduating thousands of dentists a year. Because of pandemic-era remote learning, some newly qualified dentists have very little hands-on experience, which is why even local patients are cautious about brand-new graduates. Always check the background, experience, and reviews of the dentist who will actually treat you. Look for the Medical Tourism Certificate

Only clinics with an official Health Tourism Certificate are legally allowed to treat foreign patients — and the requirements are strict. A clinic must have at least five years’ experience and English-speaking staff (typically a patient coordinator and online support), verified through TÖMER, the government English programme run by Ankara University. It must also have a proper website that gives full details about the clinic and its doctors. Be wary of anonymous websites running Google adverts with no information about who’s actually treating you — and always ask a clinic or agency directly whether they hold this certificate.

Look for International Accreditation Too

The Health Tourism Certificate is a Turkish government requirement — essential, but national. The strongest additional signal is independent international accreditation, because it is assessed by a body outside Turkey and published on a public register you can check yourself. We hold AACI accreditation (American Accreditation Commission International) as a dental organisation, along with ISO 9001:2015 certification issued by AACI. Ask any clinic you are considering whether they hold an international accreditation — and then verify it on the accrediting body’s own register rather than taking a logo on a website at face value.

Check reviews the right way

Reviews matter, but online fraud is common, and some clinics have used fake reviews on Google Maps. On Trustpilot, check two things: first, whether the clinic itself is verified (proof of identity, contact details, domain ownership, bank account); and second, whether its reviews are verified rather than only organic — a clinic with a Trustpilot subscription can invite real patients to leave verified reviews, so a profile with only unverified reviews is a red flag. Beyond that, look at real before-and-after photos and patient video reviews, which are much harder to fake.

Be wary of prices that are too good to be true

Turkey can be genuinely affordable because labour costs are lower — but laboratory materials and equipment cost roughly the same as anywhere else. So when you see a price that’s dramatically cheaper than everyone else’s, ask what’s being compromised. Don’t risk your health to save a little more money; choosing an unqualified clinic often leads to poor work, complications, and costly corrective treatment back home.

Get a quote from a real X-ray, and read the consent forms

Photos can only give a rough idea of a treatment plan — a fresh X-ray gives your dentist nearly all the detail they need for an accurate quote. It’s also wise to get a second opinion from another clinic, and always read and sign your consent forms carefully before any treatment in a foreign country.
